Chaplin Country is south of Saskatoon on Hwy 11 and if you are like most people (myself included) you have never heard of this place. Although I did not visit their bed and breakfast set up, I did enjoy a school field trip with my daughter. This place is absolutely amazing, surprisingly so. When I think of a farm or a bed and breakfast, certain images come to mind and these were shattered.
1. Kick Ass Park
We pulled up to Chaplin and they have an amazing park set up. Everything you can imagine is laid out for the kids. They have an actual doll house, mock snowmobiles, tire swings shaped like horses, a puppet show set up, seriously EVERYTHING!
2. Interactive Barn
After being overwhelmed with their amazing playground set up, you are then sent to the barn. When I think of a barn I think of horses and hay, that is all. But that is NOT what Chaplin thought of. They have petting stalls set up for the kids. With baby bunnies, kittens, a place to milk a goat, they can brush a sow’s hair, stand in a piglet’s pen, sit on a mock bull rider…AWESOME! Your child will be overwhelmed with wow!
3. Hay Bails
Yay! Who doesn’t like climbing in, out of and on top of hay! Crazy fun for the kids. A little risk here, couple of the kids fingers get stepped on but isn’t that what childhood is all about! Yay! Hay!
4. Learning Barn
Next you get to check out a learning style barn area. They have different seeds placed out, a skull (maybe a bull, hmm memory is not 100) with an actual gun shot hole in the head (sweet) and a varnished cow stomach showing all of its digestive glory! Cool.
5. Little Run Around Time
Farmer Kathy (who has been working with children and their parents for years, I’d elaborate but you can check this place out and do that for yourself), next huddles all the children and the slow walking parents for a stuffed animal (not actual ”stuffed animals”, but the plush kind don’t worry) hunt. The children and their now tired parents are sent through a little maze of hay bails to a field of trees with stuffed animals hiding in them and for the kids to spot. Your kids will love it, you will be a little tired and chatting with your friend at this point.
6. Snack Time!
Phew! You’re hungry and need to sit down. Back to a barn, time to eat.
7. Farmer Kathy’s Whistle
While eating your food a little cautiously, because you are thinking of farm animal germs, you hear “the whistle”. Oh good. You’re not sure what farmer Kathy is saying because you are fully engrossed in a conversation with your friend and your child is a touch over stimulated and needing some serious attention, but you notice everyone finishing their snacks and making their way back to the play area. You get to chase children some more. Good.
You never thought you would be so thankful to see a bus! That’s weird. After having the best time ever, everyone says thank you to Farmer Kathy and loads up on the huge yellow limo. Best time ever!!
If you get an opportunity to take this school trip with your child, do it! Take lots of pictures because your child will have super fond memories of this place and you will have a slight nerve reaction to whistles…oh well, all’s well that ends well!
